WARMER MIXTAPES #642 | by Andy Hobbs [Hobzee] and Dan Blishen [Zyon Base] of Silent Dust

SIDE A | by Dan Blishen

1. Unknown Artist | Nkponam Isuhoke Owo
This came out on an album of various recordings from Biafra during the Nigerian Civil War in the late 60s. The singer is unknown, but it could almost have been arranged by a Musical Bones-era Lee Perry.

2. Rodriguez | Crucify Your Mind
If you haven't seen Searching For Sugar Man (and you're not South African) you probably haven't heard of Rodriguez. Watch the film and fall in Love with this guy's music.

3. Joey Bada$$ | Flowers
Off the Rejex mixtape. The beat was originally a Madlib production for Dudley Perkins, but Joey is great on this.

4. TNGHT | Goooo
Still love this EP. Still my favourite tune on it.

5. Segun Bucknor & His Revolution | La La La
If there's ever a Nollywood remake of Reservoir Dogs, this has to be the Title Music.

6. Madlib | African Voodoo Queen (Drama)
This is off the Beat Kondukta In Africa CD, but is only one of 100s of his I could have chosen. I just happened to have this album on when I was writing this.

7. Kab Driver | E-M-O Transistor Array
Probably one of my favourite Electronic tunes of 2012. Great track on a great album.

8. Wrecking Crew | Scallops
Perfect 90s Hip Hop. Except it came out this year.

9. Piero Umiliani | Addio Isola Felice
I love 70s Italian Giallo soundtracks. Edda Dell'Orso's vocals and the string arrangement are incredible.

10. John Lurie | Canoe
From the Fishing With John soundtrack. Good Fishing Music.

SIDE B | by Andy Hobbs

1. Smoke DZA | Ashtray (feat. Domo Genesis & Schoolboy Q)
I loved Smoke DZA's Rugby Thompson album and this is one of the best tracks on it. Production comes from Harry Fraud and with a great verse from Schoolboy Q you can’t go wrong!!

2. Captain Murphy | Mighty Morphin Foreskin
As much as I love Flying Lotus’ work, there has always been a part of me that wanted him to go full Hip Hop and I finally got my wish with the Captain Murphy alias. It’s a great track with one of the best titles in years! It also samples Street Fighter...

3. LL Cool J | Eat 'Em Up, L Chill
I had to put something a little older in here and LL gets the nod! A classic beat from Marley Marl and LL in his prime!

4. Miguel | How Many Drinks?
Miguel’s Kaleidoscope Dream album was one that took me by surprise and was as good as Frank Ocean’s but maybe got over shadowed by Channel Orange. This is probably the most orthodox track on the album but it’s a great mix of an old Soul sample and 808s.

5. Sinistarr& Sub | Drama Dub (feat. Teddy MC)
Had to put some Drum & Bass on this list! Sinistarr is doing some really great things and this is a prime example of him at his best filled great edits, weighty bass and just different enough to stand out from the rest. Look out for a Sinistarr single on our label none60 this year.

6. Neil Young | Cortez The Killer
Seven and a half minutes of Neil Young in his prime singing about the fall of the Aztec empire? Yes, please. One of the greatest Jam tracks ever with some Hypnotising guitar solos and a chord sequence I never tire of!

7. Four Tet | Pyramid
Talking of Hypnotising, I loved this one from Four Tet’s Fabric Live mix and it works really well in the context of his Pink LP. Great vocal cut ups on this one and an arrangement that again proves that Four Tet is the king of the Progression.

8. Bill Fay | Never Ending Happening
Soundtrack for the end of the world? Thankfully the Mayans got it wrong but this would have been my choice to go out….

9. A$AP Rocky | 1 Train (feat. Kendrick Lamar, Joey Bada$$, Yelawolf, Danny Brown, Action Bronson & Big K.R.I.T.)
I won’t list everyone that features on this track but it’s pretty much everyone you should be listening to in Hip Hop or will be very soon! The Hit Boy beat is something else too, there is a line on another Rocky track that goes this is boom bap mixed with new raps... This track well and truly backs that up. If you think Hip Hop ceased to be in '96, I urge you to give this a listen.

10. Main Attrakionz | Do It For The Bay (feat. DaVinci)
The second Harry Fraud production in my list… Infectious horn samples, Rhodes and Main Attrakionz doing their thing!
